We’ve decided to give proper guidance about these delicious sweet delights from South Asia.

Indian sweets are popularly known as Mithai.

This word derived from the word mitha that means sweet.

There are so many varieties of specific types of Indian sweets are available.

Indian sweets come in different types of colors, textures and shapes & Smell.

Each sweet has its own identity.

State-wise it may be different. We look at some of the most popular Indian sweets made and available every corner of our country.

Common types of Mithai that people consume especially at special festivals or occasions like weddings, parties and functions, and festivals like Diwali, Eid, and Vaisakhi & Durga Puja.

Many of the recipes for the sweets originated centuries ago with many of the sweets being cooked at home.

However, some families still cook such sweets at home especially if they have elders in the family who know how to prepare them.

However, the majority of people buy them at “sweet centers” or restaurants as take-outs or order them as gifts to be given at specific events like a wedding.

Here are some popular Indian sweets available at most “sweet centers” in major towns and cities in the UK such as Leicester, Birmingham, Southall, Wembley, Bradford, and Manchester.

2.1. Besan Ki Laddu:

 A ball-shaped yellow sweet made from gram flour, ghee, and sugar.

It is popular for its rich taste.

The Besan is roasted with ghee, to give that nutty flavor and once it turns golden brown, the sugar is added along with nuts.

And after it cools down, the cooked Besan is shaped into medium-sized balls.

Besan Ki Laddu recipe-

  • Total time – 35 minutes
  • Recipe Type – Sweets/Snack
  • Cuisine – Indian
  • Yield/Serves – 8 pieces

Ingredients –

  • Gram flour (Besan/Chickpea flour)
  • Ghee
  • Powdered sugar
  • Saffron strands
  • Cardamom powder
  • Nutmeg powder
  • Sliced almonds
  • Sliced pistachios

Laddu is a traditional Indian sweet that is made with a wide range of ingredients.

The Besan Ladoo, for example, is made from Besan or chickpea flour that is roasted till golden brown.

Then mixed with sugar then shaped into round balls.

The intense aroma of ghee and saffron & cardamom makes it simply irresistible and appetizing.

Keep roasting till the dough turns golden brown and emits a nice aroma.

You can make it crispy by using coarsely ground chickpea flour instead of smooth gram flour.


2.2. Bengali Rasgulla:

Rasgulla is an extremely popular Indian dessert made from chenna (Indian cottage cheese) that is shaped in the form of balls and soaked in light sugar syrup.

The most important step in preparing Rasgulla is making the chenna.

It is done by curdling milk and separating the cheese from the way.

The chenna is then mashed properly and shaped into balls.

  • Yield/Serves – 20 small Rasgulla

Ingredients –

  • Full fat milk
  • Lime juice/vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Crushed pistachio

Sprinkle some coarsely crushed or chopped pistachio from the top and your Rasgulla is ready.

You can serve the Rasgulla hot or store it in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.

2.3. Gajar Ka Halwa:

Gajar Ka Halwa or Carrot Halwa is a famous Indian dessert item and is prepared by cooking grated carrots in milk and sugar till it gains the consistency of a pudding.

It is then garnished with sliced nuts.

You can enhance the flavor of the Halwa by adding a few saffron strands to it.

  • Grated carrots
  • Boiled milk

The best thing about Carrot or Gajor Ki Halwa is that it is a one-pot dish only and can be cooked in a pressure cooker.

The best way to get rid of the raw carrot smell is to sauté the grated carrots in ghee.

It is best to do the entire cooking on low to medium flame to prevent the ingredients from sticking to the utensil and bring out the flavors.

2.4. Rasmalai:

Rasmalai is a traditional Indian delicacy and has its origin in West Bengal.

Now that you know the process to make Rasgulla, Rasmalai is a cakewalk from here.

Rasmalai is Rasgulla soaked sweet and rich in creamy sweetened milk.

The dumplings or patties made from chhana and are soaked in malai (cream) then flavored with cardamom and saffron.

  • Yield/Serves – 6

Ingredients –

For Paneer:

  • Milk
  • Lime juice

For Malai:

  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Paneer patties

For Ras:

  • Cardamom crushed
  • Saffron strands
  • Almonds and Pistachios

You can garnish the Rasmalai with almond and pistachio shavings and strands of saffron.

Gulab Jamun came to the country from erstwhile Persia (Iran) when Muslim rulers started arriving in India and establishing their dynasties here.

These sweets are made of khoya, which is ball-shaped milk powder.

The khoya are deep-fried and dipped in a sugary syrup, which is usually flavored with saffron and rose water.

  • Yield/Serves – 12 to 14 pieces

Ingredients –

  • Milk powder
  • All-purpose flour (Maida)
  • Ghee/Oil
  • Milk
  • Curd/Yogurt/Butter
  • Baking soda

Chopped pistachios

For Sugar Syrup:

  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Green cardamom pods
  • Rosewater

The moment we think about Indian sweets then we think of hot Gulab Jamun which is dipped in sweet syrup.

As a whole -Gulab Jamun is a classic Indian sweet and is popular all over the country and abroad.

It is made from balls of all-purpose flour that are deep-fried and then dipped in sugar syrup.

At the end of a meal, it is served.

Jalebi is popular sweet street food that is prepared by deep frying a flour batter in oil and then soaking them in sugar syrup.

It can be served warm or cold.

The crispy and crunchy texture of the Jalebi.

And its sweet and juicy interiors make you fall in love with the super taste instantly.

  • You can eat it alone or with crud or rabri.
  • Total time – Overnight fermentation + Cook time -40 minutes only.

Ingredients –

  • All-purpose flour (Maida)
  • Corn flour
  • Thick curd
  • Cooking Soda
  • Ghee
  • Yellow food color
  • Oil
  • Ghee

For Sugar Syrup:

  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Lemon juice
  • Yellow food color
  • Rose essence/Elaichi powder (optional)

Here also, the main trick lies in preparing and fermenting the dough.

Which gives the crunchy and crispy texture to the Jalebi.

The active cultures in the curd help to make the dough light and fluffy.

You can replace ghee completely with oil if you want to keep it low in calories.
